APNO

During breastfeeding, some women experience an infection of the nipples due to a bad latch or other cause. The infection can be caused by a bacteria or fungal problem. Since it is difficult to determine the cause, doctors often elect to treat for all possible conditions at the same time to provide the patient relief as quickly as possible. We keep these formulations prepared at all times so that the patient can begin therapy as soon as possible.

Drugs: Mupiricin, betamethasone, clotrimazole, miconazole, ibuprofen

Mupiricin is an antibiotic used to treat any potential bacterial infections that the woman may have in this area. This includes treatment of MRSA, staph, or candida albicans.

Betamethasone is a corticosteroid to reduce the inflammation of the area. By reducing the inflammation pain is subsequently relieved.

Miconazole is an antifungal treatment. If the nipple irritation is caused by a fungal infection the a 2% miconazole concentration will clear the infection.

Clotrimazole is also an antifungal, some doctors prefer this medication but it can sometimes be more irritating to the patient.

Nystatin is another option for APNO ointments as an antifungal agent.

Ibuprofen is often included in these preparations to also provide pain relief and reduce inflammation.

Examples of prep:

Mupiricin 2%/Betamethasone 0.1%/ Nystatin 100mU

Mupiricin 2%/Betamethason 0.1%/ibuprofen 2%/Miconazole 2%

Mupiricin 2%/Betamethasone 0.1%/ibuprofen 2%/Clotrimazole 2%

Mupiricin/Betamethasone/Nystatin/Clotrimazole

Mupiricin 2%/Nystatin 100mu/ Betamethason 0.1%/Clotrimazole 1%

These drugs can be compounded in several different combinations to treat your patient’s needs.
