Cold Sores Cold sores are small blisters filled with fluid that will grow, ooze, form a crust, and heal over about 10-14 days. They are caused by a viral infection that stays in the nerves and cannot be cured. Because of this, cold sores are reoccurring problems. While we cannot cure the infection, we can hope to reduce outbreaks and severity with topical medications. Cold Sore preparations available: Acyclovir and lidocaine.
